What began with a guest lecture by environmental activist Bill McKibben a few weeks ago turned into one of the most monumental events for nearly 250 Eckerd College students on the weekend of Nov. 4^th-6^th.

On October 22, FAU and FIU students of the FL YES Coalition, dozens of other environmental groups in Miami, and Occupy Miami all joined together to hold a Rally for the Environment at the Society of Environmental Journalist’s conference.  With over 700 journalists (who regularly write about environmental issues and activism) attending the conference, we decided to give them a story to write!!

The Florida campaign for Student Green Energy Funds (SGEF) at state universities scored a major victory this past semester. At the University of South Florida (USF,) students voted to implement a SGEF on their campus next fall. A SGEF is a small per credit hour fee that is then spent on renewable energy and energy efficiency projects on campus. At USF specifically, students voted to enact the fee at $1.00 per credit hour. This will make the fee the first of its type in Florida, and one of the only truly democratic fee structures in the state.
