This resolution promotes a more sustainable and conscientious campus by offering students the opportunity to support APSU's investment in renewable energy sources.
Whereas: APSU is a leader of Tennessee and Southeastern Universities;
Whereas: APSU uses 25,655,628 kilowatt hours annually,costing $1,585,678
Whereas:The vast majority of APSU's energy is derived from the burning of coal and natural gas, which are non-renewable fossil fuels;
Whereas: APSU recognizes that the burning of fossil fuels isharmful to the environment and hazardous to human health;
Whereas: APSU has the ability to be a renewable pioneerthrough purchasing affordable, renewable energy through TVA's Green Power Switch program, obtaining a production credit in return for producing renewable energy on campus, and participating in energy conservation and efficiency projects;
Whereas: Many competitive schools in the Southeast have implemented similar environmental initiatives;
Whereas: APSU students have shown sufficient, enthusiastic support for this proposal;
THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED BY THE __ CONGRESS OF THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION OF APSU THAT:
Section 1: Upon passage of this resolution, the student body will be allowed to vote on thisreferendum in the Homecoming 2006 election ballot;
Section 2: If approvedby the student body with a majority vote in the Homecoming 2006 elections, the SGA will work in accordance with the Students Organized to Advance Renewable Energy to construct and pass a resolution outlining the implementation of theproposed Renewable Energy Fee to purchase and produce renewable energy for APSU.
Section 3: If approved by the student body with a majority vote in the Homecoming 2006 elections, the SGA will work in good faith with the administration, urging that the Board of Regents ultimately hears the voices of the students of APSU.
Referendum Question:
Would you be willing to support Austin Peay State University increasing its usage of green power in order to benefit your health andenvironment by paying a green energy fee not to exceed $10 per semester?
