Florida Stands with the Gulf!

Youth leaders with the FL YES Coalition took action across the state this week with an incredible round of actions to mark the second year anniversary of the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster.

At the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg and St. Petersburg College campuses, student leaders showed their support for Gulf communities by adding their names to a big banner with “I Stand with the Gulf” painted on it. At Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, students wore black and raised awareness about the second year anniversary of the spill with a screening of The Big Fix.

Campus leaders at the University of West Florida, in Pensacola – one of the communities badly hurt by the oil spill – also took action this Thursday with an incredible banner drop and awareness event. Members of Student Environmental Action Society (SEAS) wore black shirts that read, “Ask me why I Blacked Out” to engage the campus community and raise awareness among the students about the BP Oil Spill anniversary and the threats we are still facing from our addiction to oil. They also dropped a “We Stand with the Gulf” banner from their student union, shouting “Never forget the BP Oil Spill!” to a roaring round of applause from the students below. “It was a great day for grassroots action at UWF!” said UWF campus leader Samantha LaFortune.
