My story: Why I work in the youth climate movement

I have a very distinct memory from high school the first time I ever thought about what it meant to be an environmentalist. I was staring at a photo of a polar bear in the section about global warming in my textbook, not paying attention to what my teacher was saying but instead focusing on this image in my head that I had seen of thousands of people marching in the streets for the first Earth Day in 1970.

Young people from Florida International University held an “Oil Spill Black Out” action this Friday to mark the second anniversary of the tragic BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Young people and community members gathered to remember the victims of the oil spill by taking personal pledges to reduce their oil consumptionand to demand that we end our nation's addiction to oil.

We’ve made history. Yesterday, the Obama administration announced they would delay the decision on the Keystone XL pipeline until its environmental impacts have been re-reviewed.  This means a 12-18 month delay that most are projecting will effectively kill the project.

Hundreds of Youth and Community Leaders Rally for a 100% Clean Energy Future in Florida

On October 22, FAU and FIU students of the FL YES Coalition, dozens of other environmental groups in Miami, and Occupy Miami all joined together to hold a Rally for the Environment at the Society of Environmental Journalist’s conference.  With over 700 journalists (who regularly write about environmental issues and activism) attending the conference, we decided to give them a story to write!!
